We Are Behind!

Well, we are.  But not too fret.  I've chosen a book.  We can pick a date later, but let's shoot for the end of April.  Invite a friend to this meeting and invite them to join the club as well.  I believe we have bonded enough, lol!  Let's open our hearts to some other Extraordinary Readers!

We are reading....

Ayana Mathis tells the story of the children of the Great Migration through the trials of one unforgettable family.
In 1923, fifteen-year-old Hattie Shepherd flees Georgia and settles in Philadelphia, hoping for a chance at a better life. Instead, she marries a man who will bring her nothing but disappointment and watches helplessly as her firstborn twins succumb to an illness a few pennies could have prevented. Hattie gives birth to nine more children whom she raises with grit and mettle and not an ounce of the tenderness they crave. She vows to prepare them for the calamitous difficulty they are sure to face in their later lives, to meet a world that will not love them, a world that will not be kind. Captured here in twelve luminous narrative threads, their lives tell the story of a mother’s monumental courage and the journey of a nation.
Beautiful and devastating, Ayana Mathis’s The Twelve Tribes of Hattie is wondrous from first to last—glorious, harrowing, unexpectedly uplifting, and blazing with life. An emotionally transfixing page-turner, a searing portrait of striving in the face of insurmountable adversity, an indelible encounter with the resilience of the human spirit and the driving force of the American dream.

Invite a Sister for a Little Reading Gumbo

Hey Ladies,

Yes, believe your eyes...I am finally picking a date for our next book club meeting!  Before I get too far ahead of myself, let me talk about the book a little bit.  I chose Sister Gumbo by Ursula Kindred & Mirranda Guerin-Williams.  Ursula is my co-worker, and she is super sweet and a little spicy.  I anticipate this book of short stories about women being entertaining with plenty of "I know what you mean" moments in between.  I included a copy of the summary at the bottom of this post.

FYI, you can order the book on Amazon or pick it up from Barnes and Noble.  If B&N does not have it in stock, they will order it for you and you can pick it up from the store at a later date.

Don't forget this is our meeting to invite a friend.  Yay, Shay and Tamara can remain on Nedra's "good list"!  Be sure to tell your friend(s) about the book and the date.  This meeting will be even more fun and diverse with the additional opinions.  I better start working on my questions now!

Let's meet Saturday, November 10th, at 1:00PM.  If this date/time does not work for you, please let me know.  I want to make sure all of us can meet and I can be flexible with the date/time.  Don't forget to check with the friend you plan to invite as well.  Looking forward to seeing you all soon!!!

Eureka! Shanika has selected a book!

Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones

This story takes place in middle-class Atlanta in the 1980s and centers on two little girls who share the same father, but live in two different worlds. The girls’ father, James Witherspoon, is a bigamist who has two families: a public one and a private one. Dana knows her dad has another family and struggles to deal with feeling second-best. Bunny doesn’t know her father has another daughter and is unknowingly living a lie. The girls meet and become friends. When their worlds collide, secrets are revealed and illusions are shattered. Beautifully written and explosive, Silver Sparrow is the perfect present for the book-lover in your family.

Tick, Tock, Tick Tock....

Whew!  Last post was in OCTOBER!  So much has happened with the L.O.V.E.R. Girls and we haven't met in quite a while.  Let's see, we've had some ups and some downs, but thank the Lord, mostly ups!  We have 1.5 new additions to the group (Deuce; November 23rd and Trey; TBD).  Hopefully we can get some photo ops with our new babies.  Hopefully we are all reading or done reading Cane River.  Any thoughts?  Any thoughts on a meeting date?  Let's hook up ladies before we get too busy with the upcoming year.  Happy reading!

Taking it "Back in the Day"

Hello Ladies,

As we all know by now, our next book we are reading is Cane River by Lalita Tademy.

For the past few years, I have almost been obsessed with my family history and trying to fill out my family tree. It has been a task! Anywho, this book caught my interest as one of my coworkers was reading it at work. It deals with about 4 generations of women during slave time. It gets pretty involved at times (from what I hear) because it does go generation to generation (there is a family tree in the front of the book for reference!)

My coworker finally gave me the book to read, so I am going to start reading it this weekend!

I hope everyone will enjoy this book!

Movie Madness

So I drug my dear husband to the movies yesterday to see the help.  Everyone has such different schedules and lives that it's hard to get together and unfortunately when I have my mind made up about something, I get rather impatient.  So here is the nitty gritty...

  1. It pretty much follows the book.
  2. The Chocolate Pie is even more horrific/hilarious on screen as in the novel.
  3. Viola Davis needs an award!  Not an Oscar  but a SAG award at least.
  4. They changed something that is VERY IMPORTANT in the book.  It almost didn't make sense how they did it, but oh well (I won't say, in case you haven't seen it)
  5. Overall a good film.  I'd see it again.
Okay...That is all I have to say about that.
